Journeyman Carpenter

Job Description

A Journeyman Carpenter performs skilled carpentry work under direction. They take responsibility for ensuring that construction tasks are completed on time and meet quality standards. You will be provided with regular ongoing training. Reporting to the Lead Carpenter.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • · Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings and sketches to perform carpentry tasks
  • · Prepare layouts in conformance to building codes, using measuring tools
  • · Measure, cut, shape, assemble and join materials made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel and other materials
  • · Build foundations, install floor beams, lay subflooring and erect walls and roof systems
  • · Fit and install trim items, such as doors, stairs, moulding and hardware
  • · Projects may include new builds, repairs and/or renovations
  • · Other duties may include trade help and general labour duties as the project requires
  • · Lead apprentices and other construction workers

Qualifications and Requirements

  • · High school diploma or GED.
  • · Completion of a carpentry apprenticeship program or equivalent experience.
  • · At least three years’ experience as a carpenter or similar.
  • · Valid driver’s license and own transportation.
  • · Good math and problem-solving skills.
  • · Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • · Outstanding critical thinking skills.
  • · Physically fit and able to perform tasks such as lifting, climbing, and rigging.

Working Conditions

Carpenters work on construction sites, both indoors and outdoors. They are exposed to various weather conditions. They may be asked to work long hours and weekends to meet project deadlines. Physical demands include standing, bending or twisting the body, making repetitive motions, handling material manually and walking and running.
